First look: Sony VAIO CR35

February 23rd, 2008 by Setu Garg

This week I got a chance to look at the latest Sony VAIO series laptops recently launched in India.

One of my friends was looking for a laptop in the sub 50k range and we were very lucky to be probably one of first owners of CR35 in India.

I usually do not like Sony’s laptops. 2 reasons. First they do not have any offerings in the budget category. And second that their laptops are usually expensive. However, my notion changed after I looked at the new CR series.

Here is the configuration of CR35:

- Intel T8100 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo
- 2 GB DDR2 RAM
- 200 GB HDD
- ATI Radeon 128 MB dedicated graphics
- 14.1” LCD screen
- DVD Superdrive
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Apple type keyboard (not backlit though)

Some other features include:
- AV mode (no need to boot windows to watch DVDs or watch photos or listen to songs)
- Color choice
- The black one probably comes with a fingerprint reader

This model is available at a MRP of around 54k at all the Sony showrooms. You can also purchase this from some shops in Nehru Place for about 52.5k.

As is evident from the config above, this seems like a nice deal. You cannot get a similar config in any other brand for this price.

I used the laptop for a few hours and here is how I rate it (on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 being poor and 5 being excellent):

Performance: 3.5 (due to vista. Install XP and you are at atleast 4)
Value for money: 4.5
Features: 4
Build quality: 4.5

Overall: 4

UPDATE: Thanks to Siddhartha for pointing this out. The above configuration is better than the existing CR23 and CR26 models in the Sony VAIO range. People considering to buy those should go for CR35 as it is considerably cheaper.

NEW: Check out details about the latest Sony Vaio SR 13 series laptop on woikr .

    Setu,

I couldn’t more agree with you. I remember I was in two minds whether to buy it from UK or India. I thought that prices were the same and so my primary concern was whether such high-end config (2.0G - 200GB - 2GB) will be avalable in India. But I was surprised that Nehru Place offered me a config which is better than that available in the UK!

And belive me the price is much much lesser too. A lower config in UK (having only 160GB HDD) is currently costing 70k Rs after currency conversion!
    Search VGN-CR31S/L at

    or try clicking at:
    http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=VGN-CR31S%2FL&site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+CR+Series

So India is Shining after all! (atleast in Consumer Electronics Market :P)

There is another intersting anecdote related to the story.
Usually, when you visit a vendor and ask for a laptop, the person tells you about the configs. But this time, it was the other way round! Setu and I told the vendor to check about this new config which was launched the same day morning, and the vendor was surprised to know how aware people can be! :-)

My ratings would be the same as given by Setu, and I would add one more:

    Looks: 4.5/5 :-)
(The coolest notebook with respect to looks and style.
PS: I am not comparing with Mac Air!!)

The Vista continues to be a pain. Too slow compared to XP.
    Makes 2.1Ghz appear as 1.5 Ghz :-(
I hope to switch to XP soon.

To sum up, its a great machine. Go for it if it suits for your budget!

    Regards
    Anshuman

    Anupam,

As per my opinion, Sony’s laptops only look delicate. But their build quality is superb. I am not saying that it will tough and robust as the Panasonic Toughbook, but if you treat it like a normal laptop, it will last equally long.

The only vulnerable thing which i noticed was the lid which is susceptible to scratches as it is very smooth. But it would not matter much as you rarely lay your laptop upside down.

    Hope this helps.

P.S: Please read the labels before filling in the text boxes on the comments screen.

  17. Setu Garg Says:

    Brijesh,

The total free space on the hard disk depends on a lot of factors and not just the installed apps.

If you have System Restore enabled, Windows reserves some percentage of your HDD for that. Recycle Bin by default takes up 10% of each drive.

Likewise, there are many other factors which determine the free disk space. Also, per my experience, Windows Vista has the habit of eating up disk space unnecessarily. One solution to this problem might be to separate the partition for Windows installation. But these partitions are usually deleted in case you restore your system to factory state in the event of a crash.

I would recommend waiting for some time and monitoring the disk space. In case the disk space is being eaten up continuously without any reason(s), I will suggest running a thorough virus/spyware scan. Paying a visit to the service center might also help.

    Thanks,
    Setu

Ok Setu, let me consolidate it in a single comment.

    Here i go..

Our total capacities are matching around 176 GB,, thats great..

but, I would love to know the available free space also which you got while you purchased your lappy CR 35 ?

I mean out of total 176 GB, windows Vista might have taken some space + pre installed softwares also might have taken some space… right ?

So please let me know.. what is the free space available after the preinstalled softwares and vista installed on your lappy !!

I know the total is 176 GB.

But you know after just installing microsoft office 2003, winamp, winzip and tally,, my available space comes to 149 GB or close to 150 GB only.

all the above are called 3rd party softwares. and just these 4 softwares cant take out 25 gb from my hard disk,

so please let me know your available free space in your hard disk after calculating (subtracting) vista and all pre installed softwares of VAIO from the 176 GB.

I hope i am clear on it. Setu

please write to me as soon as possible..

All these sony guys are not answering me properly on fone cos they dont know the answer as well..

Sony CR35 comes with 176GB hard disk space, and I had around 150GB of free space when I received the laptop with pre-installed softwares. So the Vista and other pre-installed must have taken the 26GB space….

  33. Brijesh Says:

Exactly, thanks Anshuman, thank you very much.. I was shocked and afraid that i have got lesser space !!! But its the same in CR 35, so in all we get a space of 150 GB !! not more then that,, but its ok,

Now i will tell you the exact partitions.

Out of 200 GB - we get 186 GB by default (1024 MB=1GB) calculations.

that means our hard disk total capacity is 186 GB.

and then 9.94GB is utilised for the recovery partition.

so in all total available hard disk space of C drive in the default stages is 176 GB.

Now from 176 GB - Vista OS and preinstalled softwares — takes around 14.5 GB.

    which comes to 176-14 = 162 GB.

and another 12 GB of space is utilised by an totally invisible source called the HARD DISK SOURCE FILE of INSTALLATION FOR VISTA OS.

these guys dont provide the cd for source file of vista , but the source file for vista installation is already there in hard disk which is around 12 GB.

so 162-12 = 150 GB,, the total free space in default conditions.

I hope i am correct on it, please let me know if i am wrong Anshuman or anyone.

PS- Please note the difference between VISTA OS and the source file for VISTA OS installation.

  47. Setu Garg Says:

    @Mukul,

You can use any partition manager to partition your hard drive. I have used Paragon partition manager with Windows Vista and it works fine. It can partition your drive without loosing your data.

However, in case you recover your laptop using the recovery drive or DVDs, all partitions are reset. Check with your laptop support guys if this is the case.

The recovery drive is the 2nd partition in your computer. Usually D: in new laptops. There is nothing much to see in that as it stores the software factory image of your laptop. When you recover your laptop, this image is picked from the recovery partition and applied to the user partition (C:). This recovers your laptop to the factory state. It is recommended that you create DVDs for recovery. There is a software installed on your laptop to create those.

  51. Setu Garg Says:

    @sumit,

dv6767tx is indeed a promising laptop with more memory and better graphics card than CR35.

    The pros over CR35:
    - More RAM
    - 250 GB HDD
    - 256 MB NVIDIA graphics card

    The cons:
    - 3 GB RAM probably means no dual channel support. Lower performance
    - 15.4” screen. Some people may not notice a difference, but its a downer for me. I just think that 14.1” is perfect. 13.3” is good too
    - 1.83 GHz inferior processor. Low performance
    - expensive
    - standard looks

As you can see, CR35 is a perfect combination of style & performance. It might have a little less memory, but still is high on the performance front. Plus it looks great and is cheaper.

Sony service centers might not be as prevalent as HP’s, but I guess Sony’s service is good. Hadn’t had a change to go to a service center yet!

  52. Setu Garg Says:

    @sumit,

dv6767tx is indeed a promising laptop with more memory and better graphics card than CR35.

    The pros over CR35:
    - More RAM
    - 250 GB HDD
    - 256 MB NVIDIA graphics card

    The cons:
    - 3 GB RAM probably means no dual channel support. Lower performance
    - 15.4” screen. Some people may not notice a difference, but its a downer for me. I just think that 14.1” is perfect. 13.3” is good too
    - 1.83 GHz inferior processor. Low performance
    - expensive
    - standard looks

    dear setu!
Congrats on the tremendous google traffic you are getting on searches for Sony Vaio CR35.

Comparing Dell XPS 1530 and Sony CR35, I see the following:

    Pro’s for Sony:
    1. Trusted name
    2. 3 yr extendable warranty
    3. Oomph factor (it’s a VAIO after all)
    4. Plenty of after sales service
    5. Stylish looks
    6. Business laptop

    Pro’s for Dell:
    1. Popular brand
    2. CNET editor’s choice

    Cons for dell xps:
    1. Hate that silver keypad
    2. 15 days delivery time
    3. After sales service existent?
    4. Not too sturdy and rugged
    5. More of a gaming machine than a business machine. Good if you are buying a laptop for games.
    6. The fully loaded model would cost abt 62k (in delhi) compared to 53k for sony vaio.

Config wise, 62k for dell = 53k for sony. Plus, think about this - dell’s flasgship model costs same as sony’s starting model. It’s like buying a high end hyundai vs. a low end mercedes

    Which one will you buy?

    Hi folks,

I tried using shrink volume option in vista for partitioning, but it only frees up 80 GB out of 180 GB .. so my C:\ is right now 100 GB. I want to bring this down to 40 GB. I have already tried moving pagefiles and disabling shadow copies. Also set restore point’s max size limit to 4GB rather than 28 GB (earlier).

The situation is still the same.

Any hints on this before i go ahead to try out some 3rd party tool like Paragon / Patition Magic /Acrolis ?

  77. Setu Garg Says:

    @Saravanan,

Laptops usually have 2 slots for RAM with support for up to 2 GB per slot making it a maximum of 4 GB.

Dual channel configuration means that the system can access the memory installed in the 2 slots simultaneously at the same time (in parallel). However, this configuration needs the memory modules to be of exactly the same capacity & type.

The memory modules available in the market are in 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB & 4 GB. For 3 GB, you will have to use a 1 GB and a 2 GB module. These will not run with dual channel support.

    @Mukul,

I will recommend you to go for 3rd party partition managers for this task.

The shrink volume feature works only with contiguous space. So, it might pose limitations to the process.

I have used Paragon Partition Manager on Vista and it does the job well.

  83. Setu Garg Says:

    @Saravanan,

No it does not mean that. Not having dual channel support does NOT degrade the system performance significantly. However, dual channel support is recommended if you use heavy applications like 3D games & Audio/Video editing software.

    @Sanjay,

Here is the config of Dell XPS M1330:

    - Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T8100
    - Memory: 3GB Dual-channel 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    - Hard drive: 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - Chipset: Intel® 965GM Chipset
    - Graphics: Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    - Operating System: Windows Vista Premium
    - Screen size (diagonal): 13.3 inches

The starting price of this laptop is INR 53990 excluding taxes and delivery.

The configuration looks promising. However, after sales service has always been a concern with Dell. Since they do not have any service centers you can visit, it is sometimes difficult to get the product properly serviced from them. Also, they tend to add up a lot of extra charges to the base price (taxes, octroi, installation, handling etc.). This increases the price exorbitantly. Since, they do not sell their products in shops, yo cannot negotiate/save on these charges.

Dell XPS M1330 looks like a good choice if you want a small and portable laptop.

The wireless + bluetooth switch is pain in linux.

Keyboard is not that responsive as I would have liked to.

There is an issue of color peel off near hinges or lower part of the screen. (Below Sony Logo) due to some kind of friction.

Its ubber quiet compared to HP, compaq, acer etc….

AV Mode works with XP installation.

As you said that Dell’s support isn’t good in Bangalore. I would suggest going for Sony. Sony’s service is pretty good in Delhi. And I expect nothing less in Bangalore.

From a cost point of view, usually laptop’s service is costly. However, there are extended service plans available which you can buy from a Sony authorized dealer. I would suggest buying one at the time you purchase the laptop.

    @Anand,

From the config you have given, it looks like Dell is on the pricey side.

    Hope this helps.

    Review: Compaq Presario V3780TU Notebook…

The Compaq Presario V3780TU Notebook is a well balanced mid range laptop aimed at home users and students. The configuration is more than enough for basic home usage and most students needs. Here is the detailed configuration:

    Microprocessor
    1.83 GH…

  132. Sony CR35/36 Says:

Both CR 35 and CR 36 has some default issues

    1. Bad egronomics - The outer metal rib causes pain in palm if you use long hours and have you hand placed over touchpad.
    2. The outer metal rib catches rust.
    3. Scratches can be seen below the “Sony” Logo on the screen panel.
    4. CR-36 comes with 2 legs/pin power connector. This means no netural/earthing. Thus the metal rib at times gives mild electric shocks.
    5. The CR series is not good for long usage as processor cooling is not done well and its makes lot of heat.

Also note its 82 keys layout makes hard time to user who have frequent use of “Home, page up, page down, end” keys.

    Sethu,

i bought Sony vaio CR 36G after all of your valuable comments.

    I have a doubt…Can i upgrade my graphics card?
Does it have compatability to update……..

One morething,,,,,ram whatever they have given which is 2gb ram in one slot or else 1gb ram in 2 slots……..

    looking forward your reply..

    regards,
    Nandha

  135. Setu Garg Says:

I don't think you will be able to upgrade the graphics card. In contrast to desktops where cards are installed in slots, laptops usually have these cards built on the motherboards which make it difficult to swap them.

The RAM should be 1GB x 2 to support dual channel mode. If you want to upgrade, you will have to exchange the two 1 GB modules with two 2 GB ones. Always take same sized and same speed modules to support dual channel mode.

Now a days, some high end laptops are coming with four ram slots. You can check with Sony service center and find out if your laptop has 2 or 4 ram slots and upgrade accordingly.

i am in a delima wether to go for a sony vaio or dell becoz people have been suggesting dell for reliablility, what should i go for?

  138. Setu Garg Says:

It depends on your personal choice in such a case. I would just like to say that:

    - I have not heard good reviews for Dell's service.
    - Vaio's keyboard is much better than Dell's
    - Vaio has better looks
